BPA gets new ISDC centre

NRG-sponsored centre opens on World Disabled Day.

Ahmedabad Mayor Bijal Patel inaugurated the Maniben Kashibhai Patel (Chaloda) Intervention and Skill Development Centre (ISDC) at Blind People’s Association (BPA) on Tuesday. This coincides with the occasion of World Disabled Day. The centre was sponsored by NRG Hiroobhai Kashibhai Patel, at a cost of Rs1.68 crore in the memory of his mother Maniben, who encouraged him to study.

The new ISDC will house vocational training units for teaching skills and trades like tie and dye, block printing, diya-making, kits and bags and other trades for persons with multiple disabilities. It will also have a physiotherapy unit for providing services to young children with multiple disabilities as well as adjustment training to newly blinded and disabled persons. There will also be early intervention and counselling services.

World Disabled Day is celebrated at an International level on December 3 to highlight the needs and cause of persons with disabilities. Hiroobhai’s family and friends were present on the occasion. Hiroobhai, a native of Chaloda Village in Dholka Taluka, moved to the US after completing an engineering degree from Sardar Patel University in the early 1970s. Today, he has a large construction business.
