Girl from Amsterdam stops child marriage

Jaipur: A girl from Amsterdam, associated with an NGO, saved six minor girls from being married away in Nasirabad town of Ajmer district. The local administration and police sprung into action after much objections were raised by the NGO. However, later it was learnt that the girls were not to be married rather their cousin, over the legal age, was being married. The family members involved in the incident have handed an affidavit to the police saying that they won’t get the minor girls married.

On Thursday, news spread that a girl from Nat community was to be married. “However, along with this word also spread that six minor girls were also being married. Principal of a local school informed the NGO through which an employee in NGO, Shaira Shin, came to know of the development and immediately registered complaints with Women Commission and police,” officials said.

However, the entire episode took a turn when cops reached the spot to investigate. “Someone passed wrong info about minor girls being married off. One of the six girls who were alleged to be married, has an elder sister who is of legal age and was being married to a youth from the community,” officials said.
