Rajkot : The standing committee of Rajkot Municipal Corporation on Monday added Rs12.17 crore to the Rs2,119.98 crore budget proposed by the Municipal Commissioner, to approve a budget of Rs2,132.15 crore for the city.
While no new tax burden has been imposed, there is a record-breaking increase of 50% in grants to corporators, mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairman and chairman of various committees. The corporators’ grant has been increased from Rs10 lakh to Rs15 lakh, while grants of the remaining have increased from Rs3 lakh to Rs4.5 lakh.
Standing committee chairman Uday Kangad called the budget a people-oriented one, which will ensure the overall development of the city in addition to taking care of the basic needs of citizens.
To ease traffic problems, the budget has promised five new flyovers and an underbridge, at a total investment of Rs255.75 crore. In addition, the budget has also allotted Rs12 crore for urban forest development in Aji area, Rs100 crore for a new auditorium in South Rajkot, and Rs3.35 crore for new community halls in four wards. Other initiatives include the use of so lar rooftops, e-buses, waste management, gardens and markets for women, a modern gym, hygienic street food and provisions for Diwali carnival, marathon and flower show.
