Jaipur: Since the time the state government announced that the Mayor and Chairmen of the local bodies will be elected by the councillors and not by the public, the politics in the state has heated-up. The race has begun in the BJP to get to the apex position of the city and thus, many former BJP MLAs and ex-Mayors want to contest the councillor elections.
Interestingly, there are many big names from the BJP who are expected to fight the local body polls.
It is worth mentioning here that BJP leaders like Ashok Parnami, Mohan Lal Gupta, Surendra Pareek have held different posts like councillor to MLA. In fact, Parnami and Gupta have been ex-Mayors too. Some others eyeing the post include Suman Sharma, former MP and Jaipur city BJP chief Mohan Lal Gupta, who are likely to contest the upcoming polls.
Jaipur is considered as the den of BJP and the saffron party has deep roots here. Though party lost its strongholds like Adarsh Nagar, Civil Lines, Kishanpol during Assembly polls, it compensated with the record win of Ramcharan Bohra in Lok Sabha polls. Due to its stronghold, the Mayor post is very important for the BJP and it wants to win it at any cost.
Historically, BJP has always dominated the local body elections and specifically in Jaipur, their Mayors have ruled the Board on more occasions than the Congress.
