Man held at Jaipur Airport with Rs 22 lakh gold

Jaipur: In spite vigilance at Sanganer Airport in Jaipur, attempts to smuggle gold are continuing. One such act of smuggling was exposed on Wednesday when customs authorities seized gold worth Rs22 lakh from a passenger flying from Bangkok.

The custom authorities found 550 gms pure gold from baggage of one Gaurav Dhawan, a resident of Amritsar in Punjab. He had come from Bangkok through Air Asia flight to Jaipur early morning.

The accused had hidden the gold in the bag strip and it was covered by copper. Sources informed that the custom officials finding strange the arrival of Amritsar resident to Jaipur Airport conducted the examination of his luggage and were successful.

This is for the first time that custom officials have seized gold which has been smuggled in such a manner in the country.

Confirming the action, customs commissioner SC Agarwal informed that official valuer of the department has valued the confiscated gold at bout Rs 22 lakhs.

On this basis, the customs department has arrested the passenger. He was presented in the court from where he has been sent to judicial custody of three days, said the officials.
