Sonali Bendre recalls the time she was skinny shamed
Sonali Bendre rose to fame with leading roles in movies like Sarfarosh, Zakhm and Hum Saath Saath Hain in the 90s. The 47-year-old’s recent revelation proves that celebrity or no celebrity, no woman can escape body shaming.
In a recent interview, Sonali recalled the time when she was skinny-shamed. According to the actress, back then, being voluptuous was the standard of beauty and not skinny. Sonali was told she was just not a woman enough if she was not voluptuous,
The actress said, “Being skinny was definitely not the standard of beauty, so voluptuousness was the standard of beauty, and I was told you were just not a woman enough if you were not voluptuous, you know which it shouldn’t be.”
Sonali was diagnosed with cancer in 2018. In the same interview, she recalled her recovery phase and said, “I wanted to do this shoot and I wanted to do it with this scar showing because I was scared to show it. I did not know if I could step out without a wig. But then if you’re afraid of it, crush it right there.
Sonali has always been vocal about misogyny and sexism prevailing in the film industry. It is fair to say that not many choose to be this open about their experiences in life. Sonali Bendre sure is winning in life, be it her battle with cancer or the age-old notions in the Hindi film industry.
