CAQM empowers NCR and states to prosecute stubble burning officials

New Delhi: Paddy stubble burning poses a serious threat to air quality in the NCR. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has been consulting with stakeholders, including the State Governments of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, the GNCTD, and pollution control boards to address this issue. Based on experiences from 2021 to 2023, CAQM has updated action plans for 2024 to target the elimination of this unsustainable agricultural practice.

However, from September 15 to October 9, 2024, Punjab and Haryana reported 267 and 187 stubble burning events, respectively.

CAQM has authorised Deputy Commissioners and District Collectors in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP, and Delhi to file plaints against officials failing to enforce stubble burning regulations & ensure vigilance.
