NCoV-free Guv may intervene to resolve political imbroglio

Mumbai: Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari is set to play an active role to resolve the political imbroglio after Shiv Sena’s rebel faction, led by the Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, along with 10 independent MLAs from the state apparently broke away from the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

According to a senior BJP leader, Koshyari may call for a floor test, which could serve as a way to fill the vacant post of speaker of the state legislature. While the BJP claims that 43 Sena MLAs and 10 independents are ensconced in a five-star hotel in Assam, the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray upped the ante on Friday saying it was ready to battle it out through a test of strength in the state legislative assembly. The new-found confidence of the Shiv Sena, whose Member of Parliament and spokesperson Sanjay Raut talked of the worst-case scenario of a government collapse till Thursday, seems to have emerged after the disqualification of at least 17 rebel Sena MLAs by deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal.

A Sena leader told First India, “The disqualification of the rebels has ensured that the BJP will not be able to muster a majority in the state legislature. So, we are ready for a show of strength in the House. We are also prepared to take the battle to the court of law if, that is required.” He added that while CM Thackeray had kept his resignation letter ready even as he made a public address over social media a few days back, NCP chief Sharad Pawar convinced him to stay his hand, even as the BJP chose to wait and watch. While still at the HN Reliance Hospital in south Mumbai, Governor Koshyari has tested negative for COVID-19, and is likely to be back on active duty from Saturday “if doctors discharge him tomorrow and do not prescribe further rest”
