PIL filed against Jayeshbhai Jordaar; will Ranveer Singh land in legal trouble?

Mumbai (Maharashtra): With only a week left for the release of Ranveer Singh’s next big project ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’, the film has landed in legal trouble in the Delhi High Court. A scene from the trailer has irked an NGO, ‘Youth Against Crime’, which filed a PIL through Advocate Pawan Prakash Pathak. It was listed before the judicial bench of listed before the division bench headed by acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Navin Chawla. 

The film talks about the social topic of female foeticide and promotes the ‘Save Girl Child’ slogan. A scene from the trailer showcased the movie leads confirming the sex of their child through ultrasound technology.

Prenatal sex determination has been banned in India since 1994 and is considered a criminal offence if performed under any circumstances.

According to a report by LiveLaw, the petitioner claimed that despite the theme of the film being against female foeticide, it promotes the usage of ultrasound technology for the confirmation of the sex of the foetus. “The ultrasound clinic scene where the technology of ultrasound for sex selection is being advertised openly without censor and as per section 3, 3A, 3B, 4, 6 & 22 of the PC & PNDT Act, same is not allowed & hence the instant PIL”, their statement said.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar is a satirical comedy based on the social topic of female foeticide and stars Ranveer Singh, Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Aparshakti Khurrana among others. It is also the debut film of Shalini Pandey, who gained fame for her role opposite Vijay Deverakonda in Arjun Reddy. The movie is slated to release on May 13.
