Sanjay Leela Bhansali hopes to win an Oscar for Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi after winning a BAFTA

Mumbai (Maharashtra): The producers of Gangubai Kathiawadi have started a campaign for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) 2022 and are currently submitting the movie for the Oscars. The movie, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has Alia Bhatt in the lead role. It is based on a section of the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by author Hussain Zaidi.

The movie will be nominated for the 95th Academy Awards in all the major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and others, according to a Deadline report. The announcement comes months after SS Rajamouli launched his epic RRR, which also has Alia in a supporting role, in the Oscars race.

The 72nd Berlin International Film Festival served as the venue for the global premiere of Gangubai Kathiawadi. At the time, it received a standing ovation from the Berlin crowd.

Bhansali recently participated on a number of occasions in London as a part of the BAFTA Awards campaign. There, he spoke about his 25-year career, gave his first-ever BAFTA masterclass, and engaged in a Q&A session with students.

On November 30, Gangubai Kathiawadi was shown at The Prince Charles Cinema, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali was there. Alia had posted images of it to her social media pages.

The first Hindi hit of the year in India was Gangubai Kathiawadi. The movie earned Rs 129.10 crore at the domestic box office, placing it fourth among Hindi movies this year after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, The Kashmir Files, and Brahmastra.
