Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur performs its First Liver Transplant

The team of doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur successfully conducted its first Live Donor Liver Transplant (LDLR), making it amongst the top few multi-organ transplant centers in Northern India.

The recipient is a 55-year-old patient suffering from Liver failure. The Liver Transplant team, led by Dr. Sanjay Goja (Program Director & Clinical Lead – Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, Narayana Health), Dr. Manoj Singh (Consultant & Assistant Director – Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery) along with Dr. Saurabh Kalia (Consultant - GI surgery) and team performed the highly complex procedure which lasted for over 12 hours.

The patient, a resident of Nagaur district, Rajasthan was suffering from liver cirrhosis a disease that gradually damaged his entire liver. In the last year, he developed liver failure, with a liver transplant being the only option to save his life. “As the patient was getting admitted multiple times with serious complications, we suggested early liver transplant with liver donation from a near relative. That is when his daughter who was a perfect match voluntarily stepped in & agreed to donate a portion of her liver. Although liver donation from a living donor is major surgery, yet it is a very safe operation in experienced hands.” said Dr Rahul Rai, Liver Specialist & Transplant Physician at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur.

The transplant was conducted on 23rd March and post complete recovery, patient was discharged in a stable condition on 7th April 2022. The 12-hour long transplant procedure included an eight-hour surgery to extract a part of the donor’s liver. Dr. Sanjay Goja, Program Director & Clinical Lead – Liver Transplant said “Living donor liver transplant is a unique and highly complex surgery where around 60% of liver is removed from the donor and implanted into the recipient whose diseased liver is completely removed. The donor’s liver will re-grow in 4 to 6 weeks and she would be back to normal”.

Dr. Pradeep Goyal, Clinical Director & HOD – Anaesthesia & Critical Care at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur said “The first few days post-liver transplant are extremely critical especially for the recipient & needs 24/7 monitoring as this is the stage when life-threatening complications might occur. Our team of critical care experts led by Dr Vivek Bhargava & anesthetist Dr. A.L Dhakad has done a commendable job to ensure zero infections and proper recovery of both donor and recipient, post which they were discharged from the hospital”. Balwinder Singh Walia, Facility Director at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur said “We have a highly experienced team of Liver Transplant experts comprising of Dr. Sanjay Goja, Dr. Manoj Singh, Dr. Rahul Rai and Dr. Saurabh Kalia who were pivotal in surgery and post-operative management.
