Raj to give transgenders up to Rs 2.5L for sex change surgery

Jaipur: The government will provide assistance of up to Rs 2.5 lakh to transgenders to undergo Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) if they wish to get it done. There are more than 20 thousand transgenders in the state. Rajasthan will be the first state in the country, where SRS will be done for transgenders. The government has also created an ‘upliftment fund’ of Rs 10 crore for this. Tikaram Jully of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment said that the government will either get the surgery done free of cost or will pay up to Rs 2.50 lakh. Interested eligible transgender can apply at the dept. As per the procedure, a person willing to undergo this surgery is first sent to a psychiatrist for counselling to determine whether the person has female or male hormones higher. Then SRS is done with the consent of the parents. There are several complex phases of SRS. It consists of psychotherapy, hormone therapy, and surgery.

In a male to female surgery, procedures like vaginoplasty, clitero, labiaplasty, penectomy and orchiectomy are done. For female to male, penile and scrotal, re-construction procedures are done. In nongenital, breast enlargement, mastectomy, facial feminization surgery, voice surgery is done. Besides, Identity Card of every transgender will be made so that they can avail the benefits of government schemes. Vocational and technical courses will be free and loans up to Rs 50 thousand for self-employment will be given. Appointment of Counsellors have been appointed in Kota, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Ajmer for this. Allowance, rent and scholarship in higher educational institutions will be given.
