Singh files PIL over alleged tax evasion by Ultratech Cement

Ultratech Cement plant of Aditya Birla Group, Shambhupura, Sava in Chittorgarh is allegedly engrossed in tax evasion causing loss to the government exchequer worth crores.

M/s Aditya Cement Works owns 760.692 hectares of land, in village Mandi ka Amarana of felly limestone mines used in manufacture of cement. The limestone is conveyed through a conveyor belt to the plant.

Usually, the government collects tax through trucks which carries limestone to Cement plants through
‘Ravanna Parchi’ but in this case, since the owner is same, this system is not applicable and tax is collected on the basis of one weight-meter which is part of the conveyor belt. The weight-meter mentions the weight of limestone transported in 24 hours and the department collects the tax accordingly.

Advocate SK Singh, who filed the PIL in Rajasthan High Court, claims, “The aforesaid weight-meter has not been working since a long time and Ultratech Cement plant of Aditya Birla Group is paying a standard less tax to the government. The weight and the quantum of the tax is not being checked and verified and in this way, the Ultratech Cement Plant, Chittorgarh is causing nearly Rs 500 crore loss to the state government in a year.”

Notably, on August14, 2018, SK Singh shot a letter to relevant authorities requesting for enquiry by high level vigilance officer or the Anti Corruption Bureau. As per Singh, the matter is “of great surprise and smacks of a conspiracy so on 10.02.2020, the PIL has been filed in the Rajasthan High Court.”
