Surprise raid on liquor shops creates furore

Bikaner: To combat the issue of charging of higher rates above the MRP, an operation was carried out on liquor shops in seven districts in the state on the instructions of Finance Secretary Revenue Dr Prithvi.

There were constant complaints of selling of liquor at higher rates at shops across the state. On the instructions of Prithvi, officers and employees of various departments were sent to liquor shops to buy liquor.

The surprising thing about this was that Excise Officers of all the seven districts did not even know about occurrence of such an operation in these areas.

Besides Prithvi, only the Excise Commissioner knew about this operation. The sting was carried out on 18 liquor shops in Bikaner and the rates on all shops were found to be well above the MRP. All these details have now been handed over to the district excise officers.

An FIR will be soon lodged in this matter. Speaking to First India, Dr Prithvi said the fraud with customers at any level is wrong.

We have carried out this action to let the public know that the state government is aware of the interests of the customers.

Moreover, he also said that selling liquor after 8 pm is a wrong practice and the Excise Department is working towards containing this practice.
